What is the New York COVID-19 Travel Advisory and what are the steps for new hires traveling from one of the restricted states?

In response to increased rates of COVID-19 transmission in certain states within the United States, and to protect New York’s successful containment of COVID-19, New York State has joined with New Jersey and Connecticut in jointly issuing a travel advisory for anyone returning from travel to states that have a significant degree of community-wide spread of COVID-19.

Visit https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/covid-19-travel-advisory for more information and to check the list of restricted states, which changes frequently.

How it Works:

  1. If you have recently accepted a tentative job offer with NYP and are going through NYP’s new hire pre-employment onboarding process, and you have any cold or flu-like symptoms, please seek care from your Primary Medical Doctor and notify HR Connects so that we can reschedule your onboarding appointments and start date as needed.

  2. Per New York State guidelines, if you have recently traveled to any restricted states on this list(https://coronavirus.health.ny.gov/covid-19-travel-advisory), which changes frequently, you should seek diagnostic testing for COVID-19 as soon as possible upon arrival to New York (within 24 hours per New York mandate).  Please schedule your test in advance of your visit (to ensure you can get an appointment within 24 hours of arrival) by calling the NYP Workforce Health & Safety (WHS) hotline at 646-697-9470. 

    Note:  The above NYP WHS hotline is only available to NYP new hires going through the onboarding process and current NYP employees.  If you are not a NYP new hire or employee, you may contact our public COVID-19 hotline at 646-607-4000.
  1. Hires from restricted states may not attend onboarding appointments or start employment at NYP until their test result has been reviewed by WHS. You will be contacted by WHS when you are cleared to continue the pre-employment onboarding process.

  2. It is recommended that hires traveling from a restricted state arrive 10 days before start date to complete the COVID-19 diagnostic testing and finish any remaining medical clearance with WHS. If you do not come 10 days before your tentative start date, the chance of a delayed start date increases.

  3. If you are a new hire traveling from one of the restricted states and are unable to come to New York 10 days before your tentative start date, please contact the local WHS office for additional guidance (contact the WHS site where you are completing your pre-employment onboarding appointments, not the hotline).
