If you have received and accepted a conditional offer of employment from a Talent Acquisition Recruiter, you will begin NYP’s post-offer, pre-employment onboarding process, which includes but is not limited to a background check. All offers of employment are contingent upon successfully completing the post-offer, pre-employment onboarding process.
Current employees who are changing positions within the same NYP location may have an abbreviated onboarding process.
Which vendor performs background checks for NYP new hires?
NYP has enlisted the help of Certiphi, Inc. to perform the background checks for new hires. Shortly after receiving the confirmation e-mail for your onboarding appointments, you will receive an e-mail titled “NewYork-Presbyterian – Start Your Background Check Now” from our background check vendor Certiphi via applicationstation@certiphi.com. This e-mail will contain step-by-step instructions on how to complete the Certiphi application.
What does the NYP new hire background check consist of?
This background check includes, but is not limited to, verifications of education, employment history, driving record (if applicable to the role), and licensure/certifications (if applicable to the role), as well as any necessary criminal searches (which are reviewed as a final step, following completion of employment and education verifications, in accordance with applicable laws).
You should include the following information on your Certiphi application:
- All aliases (other names, including maiden names) you have been known by in the past 7 years.
- All addresses you have lived in the past 7 years.
- All completed education and schools you are currently enrolled in.
- All employment history from the past 7 years, including employment that may seem unrelated to the role.
- If you worked through a contract/temporary agency, you should be listing the name of the agency as your employer, not the company that contracted you.
- Include any internship/externship/volunteer experience that is paid and/or relevant to the role
- For nursing roles only: List all nursing employment history, including employments from more than 7 years ago.
How long does the background check portion of the onboarding process take?
The background check process can take an average of 2-4 weeks. A delay in submitting the background check application to Certiphi, Inc. can result in a delay with your start date, since we may not receive all of the results in time. It’s important to complete this step as soon as possible.
I am unable to edit the information in my Certiphi application form, what can I do?
When you first applied for a job at NYP, your resume (employment and education) was parsed into the application. This same information is what will feed to the Certiphi, Inc. background check application post-offer, so it’s important to ensure the information is accurate before submitting your online job application. If there were any errors at the time of job application, those same errors may carry over to the Certiphi, Inc. background check application. If this is the case, please submit the background check application anyway. You may add comments to the "description of duties" section or respond to your HR Connects Advisor’s e-mail with additional information about these items.
While your HR Connects Advisor will not be able make changes to the background check application, they will be able to include additional information in the review notes after the background check has been completed.
Certiphi is asking me to provide the contact information for my previous employer, but I am not sure whose contact information to include?
It is recommended to provide the contact information for your previous employer’s HR office. If that is not an option, you may provide the contact information for your manager instead.
What happens if Certiphi is unable to verify my employment history or education?
Certiphi may contact you throughout the background check process if they are unable to verify any information, including employment history and education. They may require you to provide additional information or documentation to substantiate employment history (Click here to review the HR Connects article "What documents are acceptable from new hires to help NYP verify previous employment or education during the onboarding process?"). It is your responsibility to respond to any calls/emails from Certiphi with the requested documentation promptly. Once the background check is complete, an NYP HR Connects Advisor will review the final background check results, and may ask for additional documentation or information as needed. The criminal components are reviewed as a final step and in accordance with all applicable laws, after all other components (i.e. employment history and education) have been complete.
