What does the Workforce Health and Safety (WHS) onboarding process entail for new hires?

If you have received and accepted a conditional offer of employment from a Talent Acquisition Recruiter, you will begin NYP’s post-offer, pre-employment onboarding process.  All offers of employment are contingent upon successfully completing this process.  Any delays in completing these required steps may result a delay in your start date.

Current employees who are changing positions within the same NYP location may have an abbreviated onboarding process.

An important step of the post-offer, pre-employment onboarding process is the pre-placement medical evaluation with NYP’s Workforce Health and Safety (WHS) department. This evaluation is required by New York State Public Health Law to promote the safety and well-being of our patients and our staff.

Once you have successfully completed all required onboarding steps, including but not limited to medical clearance by Workforce Health and Safety, your HR Connects Advisor will notify you of your Day 1 details via email.

How it Works:

  1. A HR Connects Advisor will contact you to coordinate your pre-placement medical evaluation appointment with NYP’s Workforce Health and Safety (WHS) department, which may take 1-2 hours to complete.

  2. In your appointment confirmation email, you will see the Pre-Placement Medical Evaluation Information packet. Print and complete the Pre-Placement Medical Evaluation Information packet and bring to your appointment. If you arrive without the forms completed, this may add an additional 30 minutes to your appointment.

    • The Pre-Placement Medical Evaluation Information packet has an Immunization Record Checklist which lists the vaccinations and titers required of new hires. Please bring these records, if you have them readily available, to your WHS appointment. If not, all required testing will be performed at no cost.

  1. At your WHS appointment, you will complete your pre-placement medical evaluation which includes: vision screening, urine drug testing, respirator fit testing (if applicable for your role), Quantiferon testing for tuberculosis (TB), and blood work. For some NYP campuses, the drug screen may need to be completed off-site – our WHS team will provide any applicable instructions.

  2. If you receive a positive Quantiferon result, the WHS office will contact you directly to set up an appointment for a chest X-ray at no cost.

  3. If your blood work returns that you are not immune to one of the required vaccinations/titers, the WHS office will contact you directly to set up an appointment to receive these immunizations at no cost.

  4. The timeline of receiving the results of the medical evaluation with WHS vary, and can take anywhere from 5 days to several weeks. It’s important to follow any instructions that the WHS team gives regarding completing the medical evaluation steps.  Any delays in completing these required steps may result a delay in your start date.

  5. WHS will notify your HR Connects Advisor once you have successfully completed the pre-employment medical evaluation and received final medical clearance. Once you have successfully completed all required onboarding steps (not just medical clearance), your HR Connects Advisor will notify you of your Day 1 details via email.
